Oven heating unevenly? Causes of the fault and safe ways to fix it
Oven heating unevenly? Causes of the fault and safe ways to fix it
Every oven has slight temperature differences between different areas of the cavity. A problem arises when this difference consistently affects the outcome of the dishes being prepared. At Appliance Repair Lab, we know that the cause may be incorrect placement of cookware or a faulty component.
Rule out the simple causes first
Before you look for a fault or call oven repair technicians, check how you use the oven. Cookware can cause uneven heat all by itself.
- A tray that is too large can block the movement of hot air.
- A baking dish pushed right against the cavity wall has the same effect.
- Foil over the whole rack changes how the heat spreads. It can also get in the way of air circulation.
- Shelf level matters too, and for most dishes the manufacturer names the right one in the instructions.
Run a simple bake and watch it. If the same side browns faster several times in a row, the position of the dish no longer explains the problem.
The heating element is faulty
In electric ovens, heating is provided by one or more heating elements. Depending on the mode, the bottom, top and ring heaters near the fan may work.
A damaged heating element sometimes continues to heat only partially. Then one zone of the cavity receives more heat. Cracks, bulges or dark areas may appear on the element itself.
The absence of visible damage does not yet confirm that the part is working. A technician uses a multimeter to check the heating element during oven repair, with the power disconnected.
The convection fan is not working properly
A small fan distributes hot air through the cavity. If the fan slows down or stops, heat spreads unevenly.
The cause may be motor wear or difficulty in the impeller turning. Sometimes dirt interferes with the fan. Unusual noise during convection can also indicate a problem with this component.
A faulty fan is especially noticeable when baking on several levels. One tray may brown earlier than another, although both were in the oven for the same time.
The temperature sensor is sending incorrect data
The oven maintains the set temperature based on the sensor readings. If the sensor works with an error, the system may switch the heating off too early or switch it on late.
Sometimes the problem is related to the position of the sensor itself. It should not touch the wall of the cavity if the manufacturer has provided a gap.
You can check the accuracy of heating with an oven thermometer. During operation the temperature cyclically rises and falls, so it is better to evaluate several readings.
When the cause requires repair
Some signs help narrow down the search for the fault. They do not replace diagnosis, but they help to understand which component to check first.
- One section of the heating element does not glow red when heating – a break in the heating element is possible.
- In convection mode, the fan does not spin or makes an unusual noise – the impeller and motor are checked.
- The temperature differs greatly from the set one – the sensor, thermostat and control system are diagnosed.
- The door closes loosely – the seal, hinges and locking mechanism are inspected.
- The oven alternately overheats and stays not hot enough – the heating and control circuits need to be checked.
The same symptoms can appear with different faults. For example, weak heating can be related both to the heating element and to incorrect sensor readings. Therefore, it is not advisable to replace parts based only on external signs.
When you need a technician
Appliance oven repair may be needed if the oven starts heating unevenly without changes in cooking habits. This is especially true when unusual noise, errors on the display or unstable temperature appear at the same time.
The technician will check the heating elements, the temperature sensor and the operation of the fan. If necessary, the diagnosis will extend to the thermostat, wiring and electronic board. This makes it possible to find the faulty component before replacing parts.
Uneven heating does not always mean a serious breakdown. Sometimes, replacing a damaged seal is enough. If the problem is related to electrical or gas components, further diagnosis is better carried out after the oven is completely disconnected and with the manufacturer’s requirements taken into account.
