GeForce 7600 GS is the simplest GPU from the new mid-range GeForce 7600 series from NVIDIA. Inno3D launched a highly overclocked model, dubbed GeForce 7600 GST, which promises to have a performance reaching GeForce 7600 GT. In this review we are going to compare the performance of this overclocked model from Inno3D with the regular GeForce 7600 GS, GeForce 7600 GT and also against other products available on the market.
GeForce 7600 GS normally runs at 400 MHz accessing its memory at 800 MHz (400 MHz DDR). GeForce 7600 GST from Inno3D runs at 500 MHz and accesses its memory at 1.4 GHz (700 MHz DDR), almost the same specs as GeForce 7600 GT, which runs at 560 MHz and also accesses its memory at 1.4 GHz. Since both chips share all other technical specs (like 12 pixel shader units), this model from Inno3D promises to have a performance level very close to GeForce 7600 GT but costing less. You can see this factory-overclocked video card from Inno3D in Figure 1.
Figure 1: Inno3D GeForce 7600 GST.
We think the name Inno3D chose for this product – GST – was a very good choice. The name implies that this product isn’t a regular GeForce 7600 GS and, at the same time, it isn’t also a GeForce 7600 GT. While “T” probably stands for “Turbo”, the name chosen may also suggest that this product has a performance level between GS and GT. This name is also great if you think that some manufacturers don’t label properly their overclocked models, making it very hard to correctly identify such models.
You can see in our tutorial “NVIDIA Chips Comparison Table” the difference between GeForce 7600 GS and the other chips from NVIDIA, while on our tutorial “ATI Chips Comparison Table” you can compare it to its competitors from ATI.
On Figures 2 and 3 you can see Inno3D GeForce 7600 GST.

This video card uses four GDDR3 512-Mbit 1.4 ns chips from Infineon (HYB18H512321AF-14), making its 256 MB video memory (512 Mbits x 4 = 256 MB). These chips can run up to 1.4 GHz (700 MHz DDR). Curiously these are the same chips used by the NVIDIA reference model for GeForce 7600 GT and all GeForce 7600 GT models that follow NVIDIA reference model. As we mentioned, on this video card the memories are running at 1.4 GHz.
Figure 4: 1.4 ns GDDR3 memory chips used by Inno3D GeForce 7600 GST.
We removed its heatsink to take a look. It uses NVIDIA’s reference model, which is all copper-made, as you can see in Figure 5. The heatsink doesn’t touch the memory chips, so no cooling solution is used on the memory chips.
Figure 5: Video card with its heatsink detached.
In Figure 6, you can see the GeForce 7600 GS chip used on this video card. As you can see, it is internally called G73-N by NVIDIA.

This video card comes with a S-Video to Composite Video cable, a DVI-to-VGA adapter and a Component Video adapter. No games are included.

3DMark2001 SE measures video card performance simulating DirectX 8.1 games. It is very effective software for evaluating the performance from previous-generation games, programmed using DirectX 8. In this software we run six tests. We run the software in three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32, first without antialising and with no frame buffer, then we put the antialising at 4 samples and the frame buffer at triple-buffering. This improves the video quality but lowers the performance. We were willing to see how much performance we lost by putting the VGA to run at the maximum possible image quality. It is important to note that ATI chips can run at 6x antialising. Since NVIDIA chips cannot run at this configuration, we had to use 4x antialising to use a configuration that is valid to all video cards included in our bechmarks, allowing direct comparison between them.
You may be asking yourself why we added an old program in a review of a latest generation video card. To us, it is as important to know the performance of a video card with the latest games as it is to know its performance in an older game. That’s why we kept this software in our methodology.
The results you check below. Keep in mind that models marked as “OC” are factory-overclocked. GeForce 7600 GT OC from XFX was running at 590 MHz with its memory being accessed at 1.6 GHz (800 MHz DDR) while the standard clock configuration for a GeForce 7600 GT is 560 MHz/1.4 GHz (700 MHz DDR). GeForce 7600 GS OC from Inno3D was running at 500 MHz with its memory being accessed at 1.4 GHz (700 MHz DDR) while the standard clock configuration for a GeForce 7600 GS is 400 MHz/800 MHz (400 MHz DDR).

3DMark05 measures performance by simulating DirectX 9.0c games, i.e., using the new Shader 3.0 model. This programming model is used by Far Cry game and other games to be launched in the future. This new programming model is used by GeForce 6 and 7 series from NVIDIA and Radeon X1000 series from ATI.
We run this program in three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32, first without antialising and anisotropic filtering, and then configuring antialising at 4x and anisotropic filtering also at 4x. This improves the video quality but lowers the performance. We were willing to see how much performance we lost by putting the VGA to run at the maximum possible image quality. It is important to note that ATI chips can run at 6x antialising. Since NVIDIA chips cannot run at this configuration, we had to use 4x antialising to use a configuration that is valid to all video cards included in our benchmark, allowing direct comparison between them.

[nextpage title=”Doom 3″]Doom 3 is one of the heaviest games available today. As we’ve done on other programs, we ran this game at three resolutions: 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32. This game allows several image quality levels and we’ve done our benchmarking on two levels, low and high. We ran demo1 four times and wrote the obtained number of frames per second. The first result we discarded at once, since it is far inferior than the other results. This happens because at the first time we run the demo the game must load all textures to video memory, fact that doesn’t happen from the second time we run the demo on. From the three results left, we consider as our official result the middle result, i.e., we discard the highest and the lowest values. Curiously almost all times the values obtained at the second round on were the same.
A very important detail that we must mention is that Doom 3 has an internal FPS lock: it is only capable of generating 60 frames per second, even if your board is able to produce more frames per second than that. This is done in order to make the game to have the same “playability” sensation independently from the video card installed on the PC. This lock, however, is disabled in the game benchmarking mode.
For further details on how to measure 3D performance with Doom 3, read our tutorial on this subject.

[nextpage title=”Far Cry”]
Far Cry is a game based on the new Shader 3.0 (DirectX 9.0c) programming model available on series 6 and 7 from NVIDIA and series X1000 from ATI graphics chips. We’ve updated the game to version 1.3.
As we’ve done on other programs, we ran this game at three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32. This game allows several image quality levels and we’ve done our benchmarking on two levels, low and very high. To measure the performance we used the demo created by German magazine PC Games Hardware (PCGH), available at https://www.3dcenter.org/downloads/farcry-pcgh-vga.php. We run this demo four times and made an arithmetical average with the results. This average is the result presented in our graphs.
This game has a very important detail in its image quality configuration. Antialising, instead of being configured by numbers (1x, 2x, 4x or 6x) is configured as low, medium or high. The problem is that on NVIDIA chips both medium and high mean 4x, while on ATI chips medium means 2x and high means 6x, making the comparison between ATI and NVIDIA chips completely unfair. Because of that we configured antialising at 4x and anisotropic filtering at 8x manually at the video driver control panel.
For further details on how to measure 3D performance with Far Cry, read our tutorial on this subject.

[nextpage title=”Conclusions”]
We were really impressed by GeForce 7600 GST, as it delivers what it promises: it is a video card with a performance level near GeForce 7600 GT but costing less. In almost all scenarios GeForce 7600 GT and GeForce GST achieved the same performance level and when GeForce 7600 GT was faster, it was only around 5% faster. Only in one situation GeForce 7600 GT was really faster than GeForce 7600 GST, and this was on 3DMark03 at 1600×1200 enabling the maximum image quality settings (the performance difference there was of 14%). We must make it clear that GeForce 7600 GST has nothing to do with the regular GeForce 7600 GS. As you can see on our results, the performance difference between them is huge: 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% or even more, depending on the program and configuration.
Also, GeForce 7600 GST achieved a performance similar to high-end video cards from NVIDIA’s previous family, like GeForce 6800 GS and GeForce 6800 GT. GeForce 7600 GST also kept Radeon X1600 XT eating dust.
With this video card you will be able to play games in high resolutions enabling video quality settings a little bit. Of course if you want to play at 1600×1200 or above with all image quality settings enabled with a very high performance, you will need to by a high-end – and more expensive – video card.
The magic behind GeForce 7600 GST is quite simple. Inno3D got a 7600 GT PCB and memories and soldered a cheaper GPU, GeForce 7600 GS, on it. You won’t achieve the same overclocking level on a regular GeForce 7600 GS simply because you won’t find the 1.4 ns Infineon memories on any GeForce 7600 GS. The specs are completely different: while on regular GeForce 7600 GS the memory runs at 800 MHz, on this VGA the memory runs at 1.4 GHz, a 75% clock increase. The memory chips that come with the regular GeForce 7600 GS simply can’t support this overclocking.
We have already stated that we think GeForce 7600 GT is definitely the best mid-range VGA card available today. As the price difference between GeForce 7600 GST and GeForce 7600 GT can be huge depending where you quote them (GeForce 7600 GST has a suggested price of USD 169 as GeForce 7600 GT average price is of USD 211.50 – you can find it around USD 180 on TigerDirect.com, though), buying this GeForce 7600 GST is a no-brainer if you want a performance almost like GeForce 7600 GT and want to save some money. However, if you find GeForce 7600 GST costing more than its suggested price, forget about it. In this case we recommend you to buy a real GeForce 7600 GT at TigerDirect.com.
The problem with GeForce 7600 GST – and that’s a huge problem – is that it is very hard to find this video card in the USA. Inno3D sent us a list of official distributors in the US and none of them were carrying this VGA. Actually no US-based price comparison websites (Shopping.com, PriceGrabber.com and Pricewatch.com) list Inno3D products. Froogle.com does but for a Hong Kong-based on-line store that has presence in the US but isn’t carrying this video card. Oh yes. Besides Hong Kong – Inno3D’s hometown – we found it being sold in Australia.
InnoVision, the company behind Inno3D, has to solve this huge distribution issue if they want to grow.
The bottom line: great product if you are able to find it.
